South Panola Wins Streak Hits 79

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

At least for Friday night, bragging rights in the deep season go to the State of Mississippi.

South Panola (4-0), the #1 5A school in the state, extended it's win streak to 79-games with a solid 28-18 win over Apopka (2-1), the #1 6A team in Florida before a national television audience on ESPNU.

South Panola junior running back Nicholas Parker didn't mind the glare of the national spotlight, rushing for 242-yards and all four of the Tiger touchdowns.

Mississippi High School Football Preview

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Private schools in Mississippi began their season last night and the public schools will follow next week.

Once again, all eyes will be on South Panola, which brings a 75-game win streak into the 2008 season. Rolled into that streak is five straight 5A state championships, and if the Tigers want to make it six in a row, head coach Lance Pogue will have to replace Mississippi's Mr. football Darius "Tig" Barksdale, who rushed for nearly 3,000 yards last season.

South Panola will start the season as the #1A team in the Clarion Ledger's high school football pre-season rankings. The Clarion Ledger is a great source for high school football throughout the state, and to get you prepped for the season, click here to read the paper's season preview.

Mississippi Dandy Dozen

The Clarion Ledger is Jackson, Mississippi unveiled its annual Dandy Dozen on Sunday. To make this list is pretty special, but it's not perfect just ask NFL running back Deuce McAllister, who didn't make the list. Walter Payton, Jerry Rice and Brett Favre also didn't make the list, but that's because the Dandy Dozen didn't exist when they were in high school.

Here's this year's list...

Josh Boyd - Philadelphia, DL
Chad Bumphis - Tupelo, WR
David Conner - South Panola, LB
Fletcher Cox - Yazoo City, DL
Chris Garrett - Tupelo, QB
Kendrick Hardy - Lawrence County, RB
Cameron Lawrence - Magnolia Heights, QB/DB
Clayton Moore - Louisville, QB
Pat Patterson - Noxubee County, WR
Tyler Russell - Meridian, QB
Dennis Thames - Louisville, RB/LB
Rod Woodson - Olive Branch, DB
